Nicholsons are global specialists in the design and manufacture of resilient metal seals, gaskets and ancillary components for the aerospace, automotive, turbocharger, oil and gas, power generation, and process industry sectors. With over 90 years' experience of product and process engineering design and production, allied to leading-edge technology and a highly skilled workforce, Nicholsons provides quality components and professional services to our customers on land, sea and air.

Working at Nicholsons

As part of the Quality team at Nicholsons, you will learn to develop our parts measurement, process qualification, compliance and approvals processes required by customers and legislative bodies to ensure our products and support services processes meet aerospace/automotive standards. Working alongside quality engineers, operators and process engineers you will use engineering theory, statistical tools and continuous improvement techniques to develop and drive operational excellence, manufacturing capability, operator lead quality control and business wide risk mitigation outcomes.

Role Activities & Responsibilities

Successful candidates will have the unrivalled opportunity to experience and contribute to real and critical industrial challenges within an agile, engineering-led and class-leading organisation.

Month 1 will comprise a series of orientation placements across the business to provide the context from business, administration, support, compliance and operational perspectives. During these, the Graduate Engineer will be encouraged to understand the importance of roles and functions within the wider business and the need for contribution and alignment to meet the needs of our customers. Month 2 focuses on quality engineering tools and skills: placements within the department will include product and process familiarisation as well as working closely alongside the Quality team.

The real challenge begins in month 3, when you will be tasked with an individual 10 month project targeting improvement of our current quality assurance and approval processes. Utilising academic skills acquired during your degree, leveraging the deep experience of the wider Operations team, and performing precision measurement, engineering analysis, modelling and testing, you will be expected to research, analyse and create real added value in the areas of product & process improvement. Whilst challenging and not for the faint-hearted, the opportunity and real possibility that your first engineering project could both contribute significantly to Nicholsons' knowledge base and be incorporated into live manufacturing processes upon completion is unrivalled: this opportunity cannot be understated.

Talent Development

By working in a rapidly growing multi-national business with operations in the US, UK and Europe, you will have the chance to develop your skills and experience across a wide range of industry sectors with demanding blue-chip clients and in challenging aero-engine, subsea and research applications. Our commitment to full value-stream vertical integration means that research, product design, process development, lean manufacturing, chemical/thermal processing, logistics and supply chain management are typically carried out from single locations.

This benefits our customers in providing full life-cycle, qualified, turn-key sealing solutions at rapid lead-times, and benefits our Graduate Engineers in that they can experience the full product realisation and qualification process from inception to customer delivery & installation.

Salary: £22,000 starting salary plus excellent benefits package.

Key Benefits Include:

•     29 days paid annual holiday (inc. Bank Holidays), increasing with service

•     Contributory Stakeholder Pension Scheme

•     Profit Share Scheme

•     Support towards relevant continued learning and development

•     Excellent work/life balance

In month 7, a progress review will be performed to identify next key steps in your future role and career development within the business in advance of completing the 12 month job placement. Opportunities to either; [i] focus and further develop in the area of Quality or, [ii] to obtain wider experience and skills in other business areas will be explored. Nicholsons supports two parallel 'talent ladders' of talent development, technical and leadership, and is committed to ensuring all reach their full potential whilst contributing to the success of our business.
